Biraakwate Miriam

A Teacher,
Deputy General Secretary
Uganda Liberal Teachers Union.

Current situation and experience during Covid 19 crisis

As a teacher, the global Corona crisis has affected me immensely.

This is because, before lockdown I had just graduated from National Curriculum Development Centre as a Master trainer for the New Activity Based Curriculum- starting with Senior One .

Before lockdown set in, I had given out different activities and tasks to the learners and results were expected by the end of the term. So I have to begin afresh for better learning to take place.

Secondly, other classes especially candidates would be preparing for Mock examinations which prepares them for National Examination, all this hangs in balance right now because nobody knows when lockdown will end

Also, some schools send work Online to do from home but it’s expensive and not all students have  access to the internet.

Lastly, there are teachers who are not paid by government, they normally work for lessons or work done, so now that they are at home, they are not paid at all.

As Uganda Liberal Teachers Union, there’s a serious setback because we can’t help our teachers like we should, we can’t recruit nor conduct meetings for better planning.

Everything is on hault until further notice.

Thank you.
