The main reason that led to the creation of the United Nations in 1948 was The Second Partition War. The atmosphere that led to the end of two important empires, the Ottoman and Russian empires, in the First Partition War, and to the birth of the Republic of Türkiye, founded after victory in the War of Independence, and of the Soviet Union, the first socialist state that dug the grave of the imperialists and capitalists, changed with the Second Partition War, which led to the proliferation of socialist and non-aligned countries. The United States, which wanted to tilt the balance of power in its favor and thus restructure the imperialist-capitalist system as its new leader, agreed in 1947, through the Central Pact, that the UN headquarters would be established in New York. It is understood that this agreement is the first step in the process of transferring control of the UN to the US over time. Nowadays, this fact has taken on political relevance by showing what can happen when everything is exploited and governed indiscriminately, as demonstrated by the “era of monsters” embodied by the Trump regime.
Since 1991, when the Soviet Union and other socialist states dissolved and collapsed, most of the decisions taken by the UN, which quickly came under the control of the imperialist and capitalist states led by the United States, have not been implemented, especially on vital issues such as wars and massacres. These decisions have been vetoed by the Security Council or have received the support of the United States and the European Union, which stand behind countries that commit invasions and massacres, with Israel at the forefront. Recently, presidents and diplomats who criticized the United States, including Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who wanted to participate in the UN General Assembly, which finds itself in a situation of “(not) United Nations”, have not been admitted to New York. Therefore, for several years now, there has been debate about moving the UN headquarters from New York, shifting its focus toward African and Asian countries, and democratizing its structure. Aware of this, the United States, while talking about “closing down the UN,” has set about creating another UN and, following the massacre in Gaza, in which the Palestinian people were victims of genocide, is ironically imposing on the world a structure called the “Peace Council,” of which, unfortunately, our country is also a member. Faced with this situation, it is essential that all those who are aware that the future of the world is being darkened and that exploitation and oppression are being imposed on humanity as a dominant order answer the question: “What should we do in this situation?”
Politeknik magazine, which has taken on this responsibility, has made an important step forward by addressing the issue in its publications in 2024. With the arrival of 2026, a series of meetings has begun for the debate, „A New Beginning: Transfer of the UN Headquarters from New York/Debate for an International Campaign“. At these meetings, held on February 1, 2026, in Spanish, on February 8 in English, and on February 15 in Turkish, the aim was to establish a solid foundation for the content and objective of the campaign, determine what tools would be used and who would be involved, and discuss and refine the strategy and tactics.
At the meeting I attended, it was emphasized that, in the current global situation, moving the United Nations headquarters to another country would be very difficult from a physical and financial standpoint. For this reason, the proposal to move important bodies from New York to Switzerland or Asian countries has been highlighted. Once consensus has been reached on the opinions and proposals that emerged from the meetings held in Spanish and English, it will be important to respond quickly to questions about when, where, and how the campaign will be carried out, as well as by what means. The following issues should be highlighted immediately:
- This campaign must be carried out independently of any national or international structure that could manipulate it, in particular any imperialist-capitalist state.
- The campaign must be carried out in an organized manner by a consensus-based central management team. In order to achieve this, preliminary meetings should be held with associations, unions, foundations, and voluntary organizations around the world that work in this field.
- Similarly, influential intellectuals and popular leaders in all countries that have embraced the content and objective of this campaign should be contacted. Once their opinions and suggestions have been gathered, the content, working rules, and network of relationships should be defined, and the campaign should be launched.
- The course of human history shows us that the important ideas and progressive proposals that propelled the advance of societies were not immediately accepted. Great advances and achievements have been made thanks to those who pushed that vision and proposal through to the end, incorporating them into the agenda of societies. Therefore, the perseverance and determination with which this campaign is carried out will eventually generate the resonance, interest, and response it deserves.
I thank Politeknik for putting this historic campaign on the agenda and all those who participated in the first meetings and contributed their ideas and suggestions. I hope that our path will be free of obstacles.
