THE RELOCATION OF THE UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTER

Denyse Hernández Villar
Sociologist, University Professor, and Popular Educator. Cuban citizen

Dear Comrades.

This campaign is very important in the current global geopolitical context.

Relocating the UN Headquarters will be a sign of international consistency and will alleviate the legitimacy crisis faced by this international organization due to the US government’s unilateral policies, abuse of power, and double standards.

It is both illogical and illegitimate for an institution that should act as a common tool for resolving conflicts and aim to ensure peaceful coexistence worldwide, such as the UN, to have its headquarters in a belligerent and pro-war country, to generate part of its income from arms sales, and to create internal and international conflicts and intensify existing conflicts for this purpose.  Similarly, foreign policy operates through blackmail and pressure; this pressure is now being exerted openly and through cross-border activities.

The state terrorism and energy piracy to which Venezuela is being subjected is indicative of the escalation of regional tensions created by the US and the current administration.

The current measures of pressure and blackmail associated with Trump’s new measure to punish the Cuban people, talk about the abuse of power by the United States, in the face of the de facto power vacuum on the part of the UN and the power of the majority, which can do nothing in the face of this imperialist power.

As a Cuban citizen, I support this idea and advocate that the headquarters should be located in a country that embraces a philosophy of respect for international relations, cooperation, solidarity, and the autonomy and right to self-determination of peoples.

Now is the time to cooperate, to build relationships based on respect, and to abandon the dominant attitudes that threaten humanity with collapse.

I am grateful to be part of this initiative:
