Education with a sense of humanity in times of global uncertainty – Juan Gabriel Muñoz

Juan Gabriel Muñoz
The General Secretary Zimbabwe DiUnion (ZDAMWU)

Exercising our responsibility as ETEX workers‘ organization and as active members of SINTRAETEX, we cannot limit our reflection to the strictly labor sphere; modern trade unionism requires a comprehensive look at economic, social, family, and human issues. In this context, education occupies a central place as a right, a duty, and a tool for transformation.

A world marked by tension and uncertainty

We are living through a complex historical period. Geopolitical tensions have not disappeared; on the contrary, they are being reconfigured. Historical conflicts and rivalries reappear in new forms. Nowadays, we observe how international alliances support positions in delicate scenarios such as the relationship between Pakistan and Afghanistan, in a regional context marked by strategic interests, border security, and political disputes.

With the international order showing signs of fragmentation and multilateral institutions facing challenges, the most direct consequences are not always measured in diplomatic statements, but in the daily lives of people: increased poverty, displacement, weakened education systems, and pressure on employment.

History demonstrates that major advances in human rights have emerged after profound crises. Nevertheless, the real challenge is to consolidate them without having to go through new catastrophes.

Education: beyond the technical training

Education cannot be reduced to training for the market. It must be comprehensive training. An education that focuses on the human aspect reinforces critical awareness, respect for dignity, and understanding of fundamental rights.

For workers, education is a tool for defense:

  • It allows them to understand labor legislation.
  • It strengthens collective negotiation.
  • It prepares them for automation and technological changes.
  • It reduces vulnerability to precariousness.

But beyond the workplace, education has a deeply personal and family dimension.

The responsibility of being a parent in difficult times

In situations of global uncertainty, the family becomes the primary source of stability and guidance. Parenting is not limited to providing financial support. It involves setting an example, transmitting values, and teaching that dignity, honesty, and solidarity are non-negotiable.

Our children grow up in a world saturated with information, but not always with ethical guidance. This is where the role of the parent makes sense: to educate in respect, effort, and social responsibility, to show that dignified work is not only a source of income but also an expression of commitment to the community.

A person with purpose understands that their personal development is linked to collective well-being, seeks to be better not through competition but through consistency, and that consistency is built through lifelong learning.

Education and trade unionism: a strategic alliance

As a union, our task is not limited to fighting for wages; we must foster opportunities for professional, legal, and personal development.

A strong union organization is one that invests in the awareness and knowledge of its members.

Education with a social focus strengthens: Democratic participation.

Unity among workers.

The capacity for dialogue and proposal. The effective defense of rights.

In a world where international conflicts can impact local economies and production chains, organized workers need global understanding and constant preparation.

A commitment that transcends the present

Working for education with a sense of humanity means investing in social peace, family stability, and dignity in the workplace, we do not know for sure how international conflicts and geopolitical tensions will evolve, but we do know that an educated society is less manipulable, more participatory, and more just.

As workers, as parents, and as people with purpose, we have a responsibility to grow, learn, and act with awareness. Education is not a luxury or an accessory; it is the foundation that sustains human dignity and social justice.

This is a task that begins at home, is strengthened in the workplace, and is reflected in the collective organization.

And on this path, the commitment must be permanent.
